Tucson - Arizona's Other Natural Wonder

Tucson’s reasons for popularity are many. A vibrant cosmopolitan city richly blending Native American, Spanish, Mexican and Anglo heritage’s. Tucson offers a superb climate with sunshine 360 days a year, a dramatic Sonoran Desert valley setting surrounded by 4 mountain ranges, an advantageous business climate, a host of cultural and recreational opportunities, and a wide range of excellent residential neighborhoods from which to choose.

When I first moved to Tucson from the Rocky Mountains 25 years ago, I fell in love with the desert, but the big surprise was that I fell in love with the mountains. Surrounded by mountain ranges that change colors as the sun moves through the sky and vistas that make you feel like you can see forever. And the sunsets, well they just take your breath away.

After growing up on the East Coast, living in California and then Colorado, I found Tucson to be most condusive to a healthy lifestyle. The natural beauty combined with near perfect weather, allows me to be outside and active on a daily basis. Golfing, horseback riding, swimming, hiking, tennis…Tucson is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. An avid golfer and artist, I choose the ambiance and serenity of the desert.

The Arts…

Tucson, known as a “mini-mecca” for the arts, presents a diverse range of cultural activities. Concerts, theatre, dance and opera companies can be enjoyed throughout the city. The Temple of Music and Art, a renovated Spanish Colonial style building built in 1927, hosts a variety of events.  Performances take place at De Meester Outdoor Performance Center in Reid Park. And, the University of Arizona adds a wide range of events at Centennial Hall. For spur of the moment moments, you will find jazz outdoors at a Plaza or blues inside a bar.

Galleries and museums abound in and around Tucson. The  Arizona - Sonora Desert Museum ranks among the world’s top 10 zoological sites, and features a large collection of native plants and wildlife. The Tucson Museum of Art and the Center for Creative Photography at the University feature exceptional permanent collections and traveling exhibits. Galleries are everywhere and offer diverse art and objects. Fun days trips are Tubac or Nogales for great galleries and window shopping. A local treasure, Tohono Chul Park offers nature trails, various desert gardens, an exhibition hall as well as a gift shop and restaurant.

Sports…

Interested in golf? There are over thirty golf courses and clubs in and around Tucson, from Oro Valley to Green Valley. The unique beauty of the mountains and high-desert surroundings lend a majestic backdrop, and all the courses share an abundance of wildlife, from bunnies and roadrunner to coyotes and the occasional bobcat. Springtime brings out the most beautiful cactus flowers, and even in the summer you can always find something blooming. I have played most of the courses in and around Tucson and have found something special about each one I’ve played.

The Wildcats at the University of Arizona offer exciting action for sports fans. There’s football and baseball, but when it comes to Basketball and the coveted tickets, the whole city shuts down to watch. Lute Olson, the coach of the Wildcat Basketball team, is a local hero and movie star a la Tucson.

Spring brings spring training for the Colorado Rockies and the Chicago White Sox. What a great way to spend a beautiful day in the stands watching the talent warm up for the season.

The hiking trails in Tucson and the nearby mountains are many and varied. Your time frame and endurance can help you decide. Tucson’s Foothill homes peak out at an elevation of about 3000 feet and the hiking goes up from there. Nearby Mount Lemon, affectionately called “the Lemon”, at an elevation of 9100 feet offers a cool summer retreat or winter skiing just an hour away.

Eating and Shopping…

When I first moved to Tucson in 1975, well - it’s come a long way. Clients from around the world have raved about restaurants I have recommended. From Mexican to southwestern nouveau, Tucson has some of the best chefs and food around. The shopping is superb and diverse - from small boutiques and specialty shops in charming plazas, to huge shopping malls which cater to all your shopping needs. I am a shopper who loves great food. Any questions, call or e-mail me.
